Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday, becoming the first Democrat elected governor of Texas since 1990, according to The Associated Press.
Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, will also become Texas’ first Latina governor.
Her victory marks a major political shift in the reliably Republican state. Abbott, first elected in 2014, was seeking an unprecedented fourth term.
The AP called the race for Hinojosa at 11:17 p.m. EST.
